can sick building syndrome be caused by dirty air ducts

While air duct cleaning alone rarely cures Sick Building Syndrome it does play an important role in finding the solution. Sick Building Syndrome is usually associated with dirty or stagnant air. This dirty air may come from a variety of sources such as outdoor contaminents which have found there way inside, and pollution created within the confines of the building from manufacturing or even general cleaning and maintenance procedures. Either way, this dirty air is moved in and out of the building through a maze of air ducts, and various other HVAC components.

Air Duct Cleaning

Once the dirty air is inside the air ducts, residue and other contaminants build-up inside the ductwok. Over a period of time both organic and inorganic dust accumulates and may become a breeding ground for various microbial viruses and diseases. This build-up of contaminants inside the air ducts also contributes to the inefficiency of the HVAC system. With a lower rate of air flow through the buildings air ducts than the buildings original design, spread of these microbial organisms is hastened.

In addition to air duct cleaning, many companies consider the source of the contaminants, and additionals steps which might be taken to reduce indoor and outdoor pollutants. Some of the steps to consider might include:

  • Outdoor air evaluation
  • Indoor air evaluation
  • Evaluation of all chemicals stored and used in the building
  • Contaminents and by-products created in the production of the product or service
  • How often the indoor air is recirculated
  • HVAC Filtration

Although air duct cleaning by itself is seldom the solution, experts agree that not cleaning the ductwork would only hamper any of the other steps taken towards creating a healthy building environment.
